A close look at the Canadian Premier League pre-season; Rosters, news, friendlies

The off-season is underway for several Canadian Premier League clubs, with others set to begin shortly.

Atlético Ottawa, Forge, and Vancouver FC all started preparations in early January ahead of their Concacaf Champions Cup matches next month, while expansion side FC Supra kicked off its pre-season slightly earlier than the league average.

The Canadian Premier League unveiled a new brand identity as part of a coordinated evolution with League1 Canada, which became Premier Soccer Leagues Canada.


FC Supra

The league’s newest club got things underway on Wednesday, January 21, in Laval, with 26 players taking part in the training session.

The team previously faced Saint-Laurent in a friendly on January 17, according to Hans Jr Najeme, earning a 2–0 win with goals from trialists Mamadou Kane and Matthew Catavolo.

Two additional friendlies have been publicly announced, while the club is also set to face opposition in Toronto and New Jersey.

Atlético Ottawa

The reigning league champions are back on the pitch as they prepare for their first-ever Concacaf Champions Cup campaign, where they’ll face Major League Soccer side Nashville SC.

The club faces significant turnover after star attacker David Rodríguez departed following the expiration of his loan, while Sam Salter was sold to Sweden’s GAIS. Both players contributed to more than 20 goals each, leaving a sizeable gap to fill for the nation’s capital club.

Defender Amer Didic, who missed a large portion of last season through injury, signed with Cavalry alongside goalkeeper Nathan Ingham, while Aboubacar Sissoko joined FC Supra. One positive note saw Roni Mbomio, who arrived on loan from Atlético Madrid’s academy in 2025, secured on a permanent deal.

Cavalry FC

After a disappointing end to the 2025 season that saw them finish empty-handed, the Cavs have started the offseason strongly, bringing in Amer Didic and Nathan Ingham from the team that beat them in the final.

Forge FC

The Hammers enter their eighth season after missing the Canadian Premier League final for the first time in club history, setting up base in Cancún.

As has become routine, Forge is preparing for an early start to the campaign as it gets set to face Mexican giants Tigres UANL in the Concacaf Champions Cup on February 3 and 10.

The club endured some significant offseason departures, with Malik Owolabi-Belewu moving to England’s Chesterfield FC and Alessandro Hojabrpour signing for FC Emmen for an undisclosed transfer fee. Longtime original David Choinière also left after his contract expired, joining expansion side FC Supra.

On the incoming side, Daniël Krutzen — who retired in 2023 — has come out of retirement to begin a second spell in Hamilton. The club also signed French centre-back Antoine Batisse to a multi-year contract. The 30-year-old defender has more than a decade of experience in Europe, spending the 2025 season in Serbia's SuperLiga, the country's top professional division.

Inter Toronto FC

Fresh off another rebrand, the Nine Stripes will be aiming to secure a first-ever title.

After crashing out of the playoffs following a 4–1 defeat away to Cavalry, the club has added reinforcements in Ollie Bassett and Béni Badibanga, the latter having not featured for Forge in 2025 due to a contract dispute.

The offseason saw Aly Ndom and Dario Zanatta depart, while the club exercised its option on Alejandro Díaz, making him a permanent Pacific player.

Despite finishing last in 2025 with just four wins from 28 matches, they are preparing for Concacaf Champions Cup clashes with Cruz Azul, having already opened preseason camp in Langley before travelling to Phoenix for two friendlies against Phoenix Rising.

In a surprise move, the club declined Kunle Dada-Luke’s option, making the defender a free agent ahead of the 2026 season.
